Rockingham Memorial Hospital

LPDA provided master planning and landscape design services for this new Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Rockingham County, Virginia.

Site master planning exploration included site grading studies to determine the most cost effective and environmentally sensitive campus plan, as well as accurate massing simulations. LPDA saved the project approximately $1,000,000 in earthwork volume.

Rockingham County required a variance permit for the proposed hospital due to the seven-story building height. LPDA worked with RMH staff to produce 3D models and photo simulations accurately depicting the building and surrounding site.

LPDA provided detailed site design services for the complete facility including detailed design for the RMH Healing Garden. The healing garden has become an integral fabric of the public spaces available for staff, patience and visitors.

Letter from an RMH Staff Member to the Landscape Contractor, Fine Earth LLC:
I am a nurse on the Cardiac Open Heart Team. On my first visit to the healing garden I became an instant fan. I knew that after a stressful day I had a beautiful place such as this to retreat to, if it is only briefly. Working in the operating room the end of my patient contact is when they are take off of the OR table. I sometimes never hear of what a difference I just made in someone’s life. I just wanted to take a moment to share with you and your staff how wonderful the gardens are around the new RMH. I go out of my way in the morning to enter through the healing garden. I think it is a way of taking one last relaxing breath before entering a day of unknown. I see physicians and staff daily literally laying on the benches and walls during breaks and lunches. Listening to the water, taking in the quiet, feeling the peacefulness. Thanks for everything
